How to Convert WEBP Images to JPG, GIF, or PNG

The WEBP format offers images visually comparable to those encoded using traditional standards such as JPEG and PNG but at a significantly reduced file size. You’ll mostly come across them on desktop browsers since they make web pages load faster.

But while support for the WEBP format has grown since Google introduced it back in 2010, they aren’t the most compatible (especially with legacy image editing applications).

So below, you’ll find several methods to convert WEBP images to the widely compatible JPG and PNG formats. You’ll also learn about the best way to save animated WEBP images in GIF format.

Use Browser Extensions to Convert WEBP Images

If you come across a WEBP image while browsing websites in the desktop versions of Chrome or Firefox, you can choose to save it to your PC or Mac in JPG and PNG with the help of a browser extension.

A cursory search for “WEBP” on the Chrome Web Store or the Firefox Add-ons Store should reveal multiple extensions with WEBP image conversion functionality, but here are a couple of handpicked extensions that you can use right away:

Mozilla Firefox:Save webP as PNG or JPEG

Tip:You can also install extensions from the Chrome Web Store onChromium-based web browserssuch as Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Vivaldi.

  1. Download and install theSave image as Typeextension.

  2. Load a web page in any browser tab and right-click the image you want to save.

  3. Point toSave image as Typeand selectSave as JPGorSave as PNG. Then, specify a location on the internal storage and selectSave.

Alternatively, you can save any JPG or PNG image in the WEBP format by selecting theSave as WEBPoption.

  1. Download and install theSave webP as PNG or JPEGextension.

  2. Load a webpage in any browser tab and right-click the image you want to save.

  3. SelectSave webPasand pick between theJPGandPNGformats. The extension provides multiple conversion options for the JPG format specifically at different quality levels. If you don’t want to lose visual quality, selectJPG (100).
