Change the Default Margins Used in New Word Documents

Give them your own special look

If you use the same margins in most of your Word documents, you can set default margins once to be used for every new Word document you create. This post shows you how to set your default margins for Word 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016.

Word 2007 thru Word 2016

The procedure for setting the default margins in Word 2007 thru Word 2016 are the same, except for aesthetic design changes over the years. To set the default margins, click thePage Layouttab.

Click theMarginsbutton and selectCustom Marginsfrom the drop-down menu.

ThePage Setupdialog box displays. Make sure theMarginstab is active. Enter the margins you want to use as the default margins in theTop,Bottom,Left, andRightedit boxes in theMarginssection. Click theDefaultbutton.

NOTE:In Word 2010 and later, theDefaultbutton is calledSet As Default.

A confirmation dialog box displays making sure you want to change the default settings forPage Setup. ClickYesto accept your changes.

NOTE:When you clickYeson confirmation dialog box, thePage Setupdialog box is also closed.

If you need to temporarily change the margins to values other than the default values for a specific document in Word, click thePage Layouttab and select a set of predefined margin values from the drop-down menu.

You can also selectCustom Marginsfrom the drop-down menu on the Margins button and enter the desired custom values in theMarginssection on thePage Setupdialog box. ClickOKto accept the different values, rather than clicking on theDefault(orSet As Default) button.

Word 2003

To set default margins in Word 2003, selectPage Setupfrom theFilemenu.

ThePage Setupdialog box displays. You can enter your custom margins and then click on the Default button. Everything else is the same as shown above. Enjoy!
